Along the West Coast of the North Island, the new year is welcomed in with a different star, Puanga ( Rigel) . This is because it is seen before Matariki on that side of the country. The reasons and the purpose of celebrating Puanga are the same, a time to reflect and remember. My family on my mothers side are from Hokianga, this is the West Coast. For Matariki, people say Mānawatia ā Matariki, for us we say, te rawenga ō Puanga. Either way, we are all grateful for things past, things present and things to come.
