A Pou-whenua is a spear-like weapon that has one sharp end and one blunt ended blade. When it is thrust into the ground it signifies ownership and authority of that area. This authority is sometimes through generational heirarchy, lineage, giving a right to stake the claim. As individuals who represent so much more than just ourselves, we sometimes must be like a pou-whenua, a stake in the ground, holding a claim, fighting for what is right. Each of us in that way, become like pou-whenua.
